What is a pool house ADU?
A pool house ADU is a fully permitted accessory dwelling unit built near or around a pool area. Unlike a simple pool cabana, a pool house ADU includes a kitchen, bathroom, and living space, allowing it to function as a legal, independent dwelling.

In most cases, a pool house ADU must be built with required setbacks from the pool and property lines. Structural placement depends on lot layout, safety requirements, and city rules.

 

Pool house ADUs generally follow the same permitting process as standard ADUs, but they often require additional review related to pool safety, setbacks, access, and utility routing. Cities may require extra inspections or safety measures due to proximity to the pool, which can add complexity compared to a standard detached ADU.
A pool house ADU can include a full kitchen as long as it meets ADU requirements. To be permitted as a legal ADU, the unit must have permanent cooking facilities, which typically include a stove or cooktop, sink, and food preparation space. A kitchenette may be allowed for non dwelling pool houses, but it would not qualify as a legal ADU without full kitchen components.
